On Saturday the 12th of March I raced the Oceania triathlon champs in Wellington. The field was very strong the top few athletes from NZ and Australia weren’t there but the next tier of atheletes and with 60 men on the start line it was going to be a hard competitive race.
This swim was going to be a good hard test to show if I have made good improvements from my hard work. I was swimming well but I didn’t have a perfect start and was a little way back in the field at the crucial first buoy but I went through the field from there and came out the water in about 20th 20 odd seconds down. This was great considering I came out the water 1:30 down last year.
I then got to jump on my Brand New Cervelo R3 and quickly powered up the field to the front of the main group, about 20seconds behind the front breakaway of 8. There was some very strong cyclists in the front group and the whole bike was a Team Trial trying to hold the gap to them, but with only me and 2 or 3 others working in our group the gap went out to 1:30.
From the start of the run I was cramping and never could stride out properly, I gave it everything and beat some very good athletes and finally crossed the line in 3rd place for U23’s. This was a great result but I do need to solve the cramp issue.
So that is now 1 race of my 8 for this racing segmeant coming up and it was a good start that I can improve on
