Rotorua Tri

On the final weekend of January 2011, I raced in a series of three races in Rotorua. This race was made famous this year because Lance Armstrong said he was going to race although that did prove to good to be true and he didn't show.
However there was still a very quality field of Junior athletes and some more experienced contenders too. The series consisted of: a Run Swim (in that order), a 2km swim, and a sprint tri.
I was doing these races as training and quality practise of race swimming in open water but I was motivated to do well.
In the Run Swim I was probably a bit casual in hindsight and I came in 3rd 15seconds behind 1st. Then In the Swim that evening I suffered like I have never suffered before after not managing to get on the leaders feet and trying to limit my gap which end up about 45seconds.
Then on Sunday was The Sprint tri. To win the series I need to beat Cameron Todd by 1minute as he had swum very well in both races on saturday. I swum well and rode strong, coming off the bike with Cam and I quickly set about putting as much time into him as possible. The run course unfortunately was technical forest running which capped the speed you could run which meant that for most of the run it was impossible to put time on him. At the finish I came in 50seconds ahead therefore I just missed out on winning, which I was really gutted about but I went as quick as I could and thats what matters.
So the whole weekend was very good training and will set me up well for some great races coming up in Taupo and Takapuna in the following weeks.
